About our farm

Ultreia Farm & Wellness was established in 2016 and is owned and operated by partners Melissa Newell and Cale Kennedy.  The two met on Colorado’s Front Range and immediately discovered their shared love for growing things.  Melissa spent many seasons working at a biodynamic farm in Boulder County, Colorado while Cale worked at a nursery and in one of Denver’s vertical greenhouses before relocating to Cedaredge to pursue their dream of owning their own farm.

Our farm started as a means of growing our own food, but we quickly discovered how much joy, wonder, awe, and CALM growing flowers brought us as well.  Over the years, our operation has evolved to focus on specialty vegetable crops and cut flowers with an emphasis on dahlias.  In our high desert, sometimes sparse, growing environment, we love that our farm, filled with dozens of varieties of flowers and vegetables, provides abundant floral resources for pollinators of all kinds - butterflies, moths, bees, birds, and more.

You might ask, what does ‘ultreia’ mean?  Prior to moving to western Colorado, Melissa spent several weeks walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain.  Starting in St. Jean Pied de Port in the French Pyrenees, she journeyed to Santiago de Compostela and then on to Finisterre and finally to Muxia.  ‘Ultreia’ is a pilgrim salute shared amongst walkers on this trail.  It translates to “go higher, go harder, go further, go beyond”.  Always on a pilgrimage, albeit a journey closer to home these days, not a day goes by on our farm where this adage does not apply.

We are strong supporters and believers in the connection and community formed at farmers markets, and you can always find our flowers and veggies at our weekly Pop Up Market in downtown Cedaredge.  We also offer three seasonal flower CSAs - a Spring Flower CSA, Mixed Summer Bouquet CSA, and Fall Dahlia CSA - as well as workshops, online dahlia tuber sales, and weekly in-person yoga classes.
