specialty vegetable crops
Vegetable production is what originally drew us to farming here on the Western Slope. We wanted to grow enough food to feed ourselves year round on land that we owned, and so that is what we did! The Cedaredge area is historically an apple growing region, but we've found that it is a sweet spot for growing veggies, too. Our farm is located on a gentle, southwest-facing slope that allows for optimal sunshine and beautiful production of many of our favorite crops. For market, we grow dozens of varieties of heirloom tomatoes and peppers plus garlic, heirloom beans, head lettuces, and a few other favorites.
Our model of farming is what we call “small scale, high intensity farming”. We farm a small amount of land, around an acre, and turn beds multiple times per season so that our yield is closer to what you might find from two acres of land. We use minimal tillage and cultivate the soil by hand and with the help of our two-wheel BCS tractor. We enrich the soil using certified organic compost, planting cover crop when the season allows. We control any pests by using beneficial insects, rotating our crops, and occasionally using gentle, natural, non-synthetic pesticides when necessary. We use drip irrigation to conserve the most precious of our resources - water. We are grateful stewards of the land.
